The Colombian joined Real for €75 million (R1.1 billion) in 2014, and won seven titles with the Spanish giants. However, his game time under Zinedine Zidane decreased massively last season, and he did not even make the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League final squad.
As a consequence, Rodriguez was desperate to leave the Santiago Bernabeu, and joined the Bundesliga record champions in July 2017. At Bayern, he has scored six goals and assisted a further 12 strikes so far this season, and has regained his confidence since Jupp Heynckes took over.
However, James is not the only star in tonight's two squads who played for both clubs. Arjen Robben was a Los Blanco player between 2007 and 2009 before joining Bayern, while Toni Kroos moved in the other direction. The German World Cup winner famously did not agree with Bayern's contract offer in 2013, and as a consequence, the club chose to sell him for €25 million (R370 million) rather than lose him on a free the year after.
Kroos has since become one of the pillars of Real's squad, making 183 appearances for the Spanish side, scoring 11 goals and assisting another 54 strikes. Overall, he has lifted nine trophies during his time at the Bernabeu so far.
