The Frenchman suffered a knee injury 23 minutes into his debut for Serie A side Como 1907 and has not featured since.
Varane, 31, made his first appearance for the Italian outfit in the Coppa Italia in August, and looks set for a long road to recovery.
Given his injury record and his age, it is expected that the former Real Madrid defender will be out for several months before being ready to play again.
Le Parisien now reports that the retired France international will, as a result, cancel his contract at the Cesc Fabregas-managed Como as he considers hanging up his boots for good.
Varane penned a two-year deal with the Italian club after leaving United as a free agent at the end of last season.
The Frenchman has enjoyed a stellar career since breaking through at Lens in 2010, having claimed an impressive 20 trophies.

His most successful spell came during his decade-long stay at Los Blancos in Spain between 2011 and 2021, during which he won the UEFA Champions League four times.
