After their record-breaking loss to arch-rivals Argentina in their most recent FIFA World Cup qualifier, the Selecao decided to part ways with head coach Dorival Júnior. During his 16-game tenure in charge of the national team, the 62-year-old won fewer than half—seven matches.
The loss to La Albiceleste proved to be the last straw for the Brazilian Football Confederation, and they are now allegedly looking for a replacement.
According to The Athletic, the CBF are looking to have a new manager in place before the FIFA Club World Cup later this year, and their two main candidates are Carlo Ancelotti and Jorge Jesus—managers who are expected to be at the global spectacle with Real Madrid and Al Hilal, respectively.
The same report claims that Jesus is the one most willing to take up the role immediately, with his contract at the Saudi Pro League outfit expected to run out at the end of the season. However, it is understood that CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues has named Ancelotti as his number one target.
They tried to lure the former AC Milan and Chelsea boss in 2022 and 2023 but to no avail, as he continued with Los Blancos, even extending his deal as recently as late last year. However, it seems that his stance may have changed in recent months, given that Los Merengues are rumoured to have been in discussions with Xabi Alonso and that his son, Davide, might be leaving his technical team at the end of the campaign.
