The Los Blancos winger was honoured ahead of the recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Uruguay at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador.
The Brazilian forward received a certificate confirming his African heritage, specifically from the Tikar tribe of Cameroon, as part of the Golden Roots campaign.
According to beIN Sports, this initiative aims to celebrate Afro-descendant heritage in Brazil, shedding light on its influence on culture and sport, with the ceremony taking place on the occasion of Black Consciousness Day.
The recognition came after Vinicius underwent DNA testing to explore his ancestral roots. Clearly moved, the player's father expressed his pride in uncovering this connection to Cameroon.
"It's important to know where we come from. I'm happy to learn more about our history," Vinicius' dad said.
The Tikar tribe, from which Vinicius hails, is renowned for its deep history and its origins in the grasslands of Bamenda in Cameroon. The group has been instrumental in local agricultural practices and the preservation of traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, an art unique to their community.
Historical records suggest the Tikar emerged following a dynastic struggle in the ancient Mbum kingdom, ultimately becoming one of the most influential ethnic groups in the region.
Beyond the certificate, the Golden Roots campaign has ambitious plans, including the production of a film exploring African ancestry in Brazil, with Vinicius set to star as the central figure.
