LaLiga Report: Real Mallorca v Real Madrid 19 October 2019

Result: RCD Mallorca 1-0 Real Madrid

Date: 19 October 2019

Venue: Son Moix Stadium

Real Madrid failed to reclaim top spot from FC Barcelona after suffering a shock loss to Real Mallorca at the Iberostar Estadi on Saturday night.

Thibaut Courtois returned between the sticks for Real, as Luka Jovic, Eder Militao started for the first time this season. Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard were both left out of the match day.

Mallorca got off to a dream start when Lago Junior curled into the far corner after cutting into the danger area seven minutes from the start.

Real were under pressure, as Militao along with veteran stalwart Sergio Ramos struggled to pull together at the back with Mallorca afforded ample space and time up front.

Karim Benzema nearly pulled the visitors level after latching onto a chipped ball over the top on 27 minutes, however the Frenchman's effort clipped the underside of the crossbar.

Advantage remained with Real shortly after the halftime interval, as Lago Junior and company continued threatening their more fancied counterparts. As a result, Zinedine Zidane rang the changes from the dugout with 66 minutes played, bringing on Rodrygo and Federico Valverde for Jovic and Isco respectively.

Whilst attempting a comeback, tragedy struck the Spanish giants who had full-back Alvaro Odriozola dismissed following a second bookable offence.

The home side launched more and more danger sings in the last couple of minutes, but Courtois managed to withstand everything thrown their way.

Nevertheless, Mallorca went on to earn their first big scalp of the season months after regaining their top flight status following years in the second tier.
