With new signing Luka Jovic the subject of major criticism at Real Madrid, he could join a long list of strikers who have flopped at Los Blancos over the years, including Nicolas Anelka, who was considered by many to be the best teenager in world football at the time.

Since his €60 million (R990 million) transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt to Real in July, Jovic, a 21-year-old Serbia international, has played just eight times, and is yet to register his first goal for the club.
In the 2018/19 season, the forward was chased by many of Europe's top clubs, but could not turn down the chance to move to Los Blancos, who, with Karim Benzema ageing, felt it was time to look for the Frenchman's long-term replacement.
Jovic has started just three times for Real in the eight matches he has played, and many fans have been critical of his performances in the club's famous white jersey so far.
If his time with the 13-time UEFA Champions League winners does not work out, the former Benfica forward would not be the first striker to struggle at the Santiago Bernabeu in recent years, although his price tag would suggest he cannot afford to flop.

In 1999, former France international Anelka faced a similar issue as he failed to score in his first five months at the club. Having joined from Arsenal for a mammoth fee of €35 million (R577 million), the striker was expected to hit the ground running, but managed just seven goals in 33 matches.
Anelka left just one season later, returning to Paris Saint-Germain, whom he had left for Arsenal as a 17-year-old in 1997.
In 2009, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar became another relatively expensive flop striker signing, leaving just six months after his arrival at Real that year.

Three of the players on the list – Alvaro Morata, Alvaro Negredo and Mariano Diaz – returned to the club after coming through the ranks, but were not used as regular starters, with the latter still in the squad, but seemingly not in Zinedine Zidane's plans.
