Argentine legend Sergio Aguero has admitted that he was in disbelief when he found out that Lionel Messi was leaving Barcelona.
Pep Hugely Impressed By 19-year-old Star
After spending 10 years at Manchester City, Aguero called time on his trophy-laden career at the Etihad Stadium in 2021.
The former Argentina international subsequently joined the Blaugrana, where he would play alongside his close friend and seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi at club level for the first time.
Unfortunately for Aguero, his dream would be short-lived as, a few weeks after he arrived at the Camp Nou, it was announced that the club would not be renewing Messi's contract and that the Barcelona icon would be leaving on a free transfer.
The former Atletico Madrid forward has now admitted what his initial thoughts were when the news was announced by Barca.
"When the whole thing with Leo happened, I thought someone must have hacked Barcelona's social media accounts," the Quilmes native said while speaking on El Chiringuito
"I thought, this is a joke. I was with [famous Twitch host] Ibai drinking mate and all of a sudden… he looked at the phone and exclaimed: 'No way! Is this true?'
"He showed me the phone with the statement from Barca.
"I said, 'Ibai, mate, this is impossible'. I told him right there and then that it was obvious that the website had been hacked and that it was probably just a bit of sweet talk from Barca who would later say that he's staying.
"I decided to wait, but the hours went by and I saw that the statement was still there.
"Suddenly, I thought, 'Hey, you know what? No one has hacked it."
'Ronaldo Must Realise He Is Finished!'
Aguero would soon follow in Messi's footsteps as he was forced to end his football career five matches into his Barca career due to a heart condition.
