His three goals took Messi's tally in the competition to 74 goals, three better than Raul had scored for Real Madrid and Schalke.
While Raul needed 142 outings to score his 71 goals, Messi reached his 74 in just 91 games, averaging 0.81 goals per game.
The hat trick was Messi's fifth in the Champions League – more than any other player – and it was his 31st career triple (28 for Barcelona and three for Argentina). In addition, it was his first ever hat trick with the right foot only.
Out of Messi's 74 goals, 38 have come at the Camp Nou, 34 were away from home and two in Champions League finals.
