The 41-year-old, who played 527 games for los Blancos between 1996 and 2007, has shown his support for the star of his former club by indicating that he feels he is more influential than the Argentine forward.

"Cristiano Ronaldo remains the best in the world, and Messi is doing what others have failed to," Carlos told to Onda Cero.

"He is breaking records, but Cristiano is more decisive than him."

The Portuguese star will feature in the Club World Cup final against Argentine side San Lorenzo in Morocco on Saturday and the ex-Madrid left-back spoke about the importance of the fixture in his native continent.

"For the South Americans this title has the same importance as the Champions League, Madrid is the best team in the world."

Roberto Carlos is currently coach of Turkis side Sivasspor and won two Intercontinental Cups while playing for the Spanish side.
