One such record is the competition's all-time appearance milestone, which is currently held by former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who made 181 appearances with Los Blancos and Porto, excluding qualifying matches. Ronaldo is only eight appearances behind his former teammate while Messi trails with 141 appearances to his name.

Both players also still have some catching up to do – at least in terms of age – if they are to beat Francesco Totti's record to become the Champions League's oldest goalscorer. The legendary AS Roma forward set the record in 2014, when he scored against CSKA Moscow at the age of 38 years and 59 days.
Despite boasting a combined 242 UCL goals between them, neither Messi nor Ronaldo have been able to beat Roy Makaay's strike to claim the competition's fastest goal. The former Bayern Munich striker netted after just 10.12 seconds in the Bavarians' encounter against Real Madrid in 2007.
