Reports claim that Manchester United have already identified a winger as a priority signing for next season.
Man Utd Star Hits Back At Critics
According to Forbes, the Red Devils are still eager to sign Dutch winger Cody Gakpo within the next 12 months.
Manager Erik ten Hag is a massive admirer of the 23-year-old, and the expectation is that United will reignite their interest in the player soon.
The Mancunians reportedly tried to sign the Netherlands international in the latest window, but after spending a staggering £85 million (R1.6 billion) on Brazilian winger Antony, a deal for Gakpo became unfeasible financially.
It is further claimed that United had agreed personal terms with the Eindhoven-born forward, something PSV CEO Marcel Brands says made preparation for the new season difficult for the new campaign.
"Cody had a difficult preparation with us because he has spoken with Manchester United," he said, as per Forbes. "They didn't come until mid-August, and it didn't go through."
Looking at the way the attacker has started the new season, though, you would not think he had a hard time preparing as he has got off to a sparkling start, finding the back of the net 10 times and providing nine assists in 13 appearances across all competitions.
A number of Ten Hag's off-season acquisitions were from the Eredivisie and, so far, Tyrell Malacia, Antony and Lisandro Martinez seem to have adapted well to the Premier League, and if Gakpo's early-season form is anything to go by, he might also have little struggle in acclimatising to the English top flight.
Leeds United and Southampton reportedly also came in on deadline day to try to swoop up the United target, but the Dutchman opted to stay put with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy and PSV, possibly in the hopes that Ten Hag and the Red Devils will return for him.
Transfer Update: Romelu Lukaku
With Cristiano Ronaldo expected to leave United at the end of the season, a significant amount funds and playing time could also soon be available at Old Trafford.
