Spanish star and 2010 FIFA World Cup winner Juan Mata has become part of the ownership group of Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion side, San Diego FC, making history as the first active international footballer to hold an ownership stake in the league.
Mata follows in the footsteps of David Beckham, becoming only the second international player to be involved in MLS ownership.
"Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth," Mata said in a statement, according to AP News.
He also praised the club's commitment to the community, as well as the values of the Right to Dream Academy, which he believes aligns perfectly with his own.
"I look forward to contributing my experience and passion for the game and working alongside everyone here to build a club that inspires both on and off the pitch," he added.
Mata, who joined the Western Sydney Wanderers of the Australian A-League in September, has been a prominent figure in international football for many years.
