PSG Suffer Surprise Defeat Away To Rennes

Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain suffered their second defeat of the campaign after going down 1-0 to Rennes on Sunday night.

Ligue 1

Result: Rennes 1-0 Paris Saint-Germain

Date: 15 January 2023

Venue: Roazhon Park

PSG made just one change from the win over Angers midweek, as 16-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery was given his debut in place of Fabian Ruiz, while Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi started on the bench.

The defending champions dominated possession in the early stages of the first, but were unable to carve out a serious opening at goal in the opening 25 minutes.

The game's first meaningful chance fell to the home side in the 29th minute when Adrien Truffer did well to pick out  Arnaud Kalimuendo in the box, but the striker could not beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

That proved to be the only clear-cut chance of the opening stanza, as PSG failed to register an effort at Steve Mandanda's goal throughout the entire opening 45 minutes.

That changed three minutes after the break though, with the Rennes shot-stopper showing great reflexes to keep out Danilo Pereira's close-range header.

Mbappe and Hakimi were introduced in the 56th minute for PSG, but Rennes would go on to take the lead ten minutes later when captain Hamari Traore turned home Truffert's low cross.

The champions looked to get themselves back on level terms but had to wait until the 82nd minute for a chance when Juan Bernat got on the end of Mbappe's cross, before seeing his strike palmed away by Mandanda.

Rennes were able to see out the remaining stages of the second half and pick up a crucial win, which see the side jump to fifth spot while PSG miss the chance to open a five-point lead at the top.
