A member of Spain's 2024 UEFA European Championship squad has revealed why he rejected the opportunity to sign for Liverpool.

In the latest transfer window, the Reds ultimately brought in Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has since returned to Valencia on loan, and Italian winger Federico Chiesa for a combined total fee of €42 million (R431 million).
Before they signed the shot-stopper and the attacker, the Merseysiders had set their sights on acquiring Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi's services.
The 25-year-old had impressed during La Furia Roja's record-setting EURO 2024 title win, and the English giants were eager to bring him to Anfield.
Ultimately, though, the Basque native rejected Liverpool's advances and decided to stay at his boyhood club Real Sociedad.
Speaking to Marca recently, the La Real star was asked if there was any pressure from his friends to make the move amid the off-season transfer speculation.
"My friends are clear that whatever I decide will be the best. There is no pressure whatsoever. Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there. A lot of what I am is part of La Real, it is my life," he said.

The deep-lying playmaker has two years remaining on his current deal at the Reale Arena, and should he continue with his performances for club and country, there will likely be interest from more major European sides in the windows to come.
