For the first time in the competition's history, eight playoff fixtures will decide which eight sides will progress to the tournament's Round of 16.
Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Lille have automatically qualified by virtue of finishing in the top eight during the league phase. But now, the knockout stage begins, and the pick of the round's fixtures is the Mancunians' clash against record competition winners Real Madrid.
Pep Guardiola's charges were on the verge of tournament elimination, but a 2-1 win over Club Brugge earlier this week ensured their place in the playoffs. However, they will now have to navigate a tough knockout encounter against Los Blancos.
This will be the third successive season that the two sides face each other in the Champions League, with the winner of the last three ties going on to lift the prestigious title.
