The Spaniard found himself in the stands during United's 1-0 opening win against Tottenham Hotspur.
Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal insisted De Gea has been distracted by the ongoing transfer speculation and is not the same player as he was last season, indicating that De Gea will not start a game until the transfer window closes on 1 September.
"We have observed him in preparation and that was not the same David de Gea as last year," Van Gaal said after the game.
"Of course, when the situation has been cleared after 1 September, we will look again. But I'm happy Sergio (Romero) did well. He saved us twice."
De Gea, however, has reportedly dismissed the claims by his coach as sources close to the keeper insist he has trained perfectly well.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, have issued United an ultimatum to either accept their €25 million (plus another €5 million in add-ons) offer or risk losing him without any profit next year, according to Spanish publication ABC.

Up until now, United have refused to budge from their €35 million asking price for the 24-year-old.
