Premier League clubs spent almost €1.2 billion, an increase of 4% compared to last year and a new record high in English history.

La Liga also reached a new record, spending €572.95 million, while Serie A, with €576.45 million, splashed the cash even more.

Bundesliga follows in fourth place with a combined spending of €410.43 million, while Ligue 1 clubs hit a total of €307.15 million.

Manchester City were the biggest spenders during the transfer window, paying €203.38 million in fees.

The English giants are somewhat surprisingly followed by La Liga side Valencia, who spent €142 million, with Manchester United following in third spot with €139.64 million.

Just slightly further back are Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid after spending €139.5 million, ahead of Juventus with €127.4 million and Paris Saint-Germain with €116.1 million.

Liverpool, with €111.91 million, are the last club to have spent more than €100 million, while Italian giants Milan follow with €90.97 million.

Real Madrid only splashed out €89.5 million, just slightly more than Inter with €86.45 million and Bayern Munich with €86 million.

Last season's Premier League champions Chelsea made signings worth €82.7 million, while transfer-banned FC Barcelona also invested €51 million.
