The German club confirmed on Monday that Joel Matip will join the Reds when his contract expires at the end of the current season.
Matip, who was born in Germany but has made 27 appearances for Cameroon, told Schalke's official website: "I have always said that I would only leave Schalke for one reason: to get to know something new.
"Therefore, a change within the Bundesliga never came into consideration for me.
"Although my decision is definitely not easy, I am convinced that now is the right time to take this step."
Matip made his Bundesliga debut when he was just 18 years old, and has since made 239 appearances for Schalke, scoring 23 goals.
Liverpool also confirmed the transfer on their website, stating Matip signed a four-year contract.
