Pedro scored the winning goal in Barca's 5-4 extra-time triumph in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday, but didn't celebrate much when the team lifted the trophy.
Messi gave his opinion on Pedro's situation, insisting his teammate deserved to score the winner to win the trophy for the Catalans.
"He deserved it for everything he has given and continues to give to the club," Messi sad after the game, as quoted by AS.
"I don't know what will happen with him, it's a decision he has to take, but whatever he does he deserves it."
The Spaniard claims he doesn't know why he started the game on the bench after Neymar was sidelined due to a case of the mumps.
Barcelona's new sporting director, Robert Fernandez, claimed Pedro has told him he wants leave and that's the reason why he didn't start.
Manager Luis Enrique explained that Pedro picked up a minor injury two days before the match and was a substitute as a precaution, not because of the rumours linking him with United.
