Hernandez joined the Bundesliga side in a deal worth €12 million and signed a three-year contract on Monday.
The Mexican striker has now revealed that former Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger helped persuade him to the idea of moving from the Old Trafford club to Leverkusen.
"Naturally, I spoke with Basti," he told the Daily Mail.
"He had a lot of good things to say about Bayer, their way of playing and their coach (Roger Schmidt).
"That was a very big help for me."
Hernandez scored 59 goals in 157 appearances for United, but was never really in manager Louis van Gaal's future plans.
