The International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) Football Observatory has announced their 10 best-value signings in Europe's top five leagues from the latest transfer window.
According to the Football Observatory, Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is the best-value signing of the January transfer window.
The study, in which the CIES compared the fees paid for players against an estimated values algorithm developed by their research team, suggested that the Magpies paid £11.5 million less than they should have for Shelvey as his actual market value is £23.5 million – Newcastle paid Swansea £12 million for his services.
In second place was Atletico Madrid's Augusto Fernandez – the Spanish side paid Celta Vigo £5 million for the Argentina international, which was £2.5 million less than what his actual value is, according to the Football Observatory.
Premier League minnows Watford also managed to find a bargain deal in January, saving themselves about £2 million when they signed midfielder Mario Suarez from Fiorentina for £4 million.
