The Portuguese defender is set to become the club's first choice left-back, after Monaco president Vadim Vasilyev revealed that Layvin Kurzawa is set to join Paris-Saint Germain.
"Coentrao arrives tonight in the form of a loan deal," Vasilyev said.
"Kurzawa wanted to go to PSG and we have been paid a very large amount. But we have found an alternative."
Coentrao joined Real Madrid in 2011 when Jose Mourinho was in charge, but his since played second fiddle to Brazilian full-back, Marcelo.
