Al Ahly Coach Makes Shock Admission After CWC Loss

Al Ahly Coach Makes Shock Admission After CWC Loss

Al Ahly manager Marcel Koller has slammed his players, insisting they are not good enough to compete at the FIFA Club World Cup following their fourth-place finish at the competition.

After attaining a podium finish in the previous two editions of the tournament, this year the Club of the Century was condemned to a 4-2 defeat to Flamengo in their third/fourth place clash in Morocco.

Koller's men managed to turn the game on its head courtesy of Ahmed Abdelkader, whose brace gave the record African champions the lead after being a goal down, but that is as good as it got as the Brazilians staged a miraculous comeback.

In the 69th minute, Khaled Abdel-Fattah was given his marching orders and the South Americans took advantage of their numerical superiority as late goals from Pedro and Flamengo talisman Gabriel Barbosa ensured that Al Ahly returned to Cairo without a medal.

Koller has since lamented his team's failure to extend their lead when they had the chance, suggesting that their mistakes were proof they are not good enough to compete on the world's biggest stage.

"We were a goal down and managed to get a deserved equaliser before half-time," the Swiss tactician told reporters, as per KingFut.

"In the second half, we pressed well and we had a clear-cut chance that should have been converted.

"It would've killed the game but after we missed that opportunity, the dynamic completely changed.

"It's really difficult to make amends for mistakes in these games and when you make such errors, it means you're not good enough to play at this level."
