Mikel Arteta started with a front three of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe as they aimed to reach their first final since 2017 while Kevin de Bruyne was re-called to the City line-up.

Aubameyang had the game's first golden chance on 16 minutes after being played in by David Luiz, but the Gabonese fired straight at Ederson in a one-on-one situation.

The Gunners striker made up for the miss two minutes later after turning home Pepe's teasing cross at the far post for the opening goal, after a well-worked passing move.

While City continued to enjoy most of the possession in the first half, they were unable to fashion any openings in the final third for Gabriel Jesus.

The Citizens came out firing in the second stanza and nearly bagged an equaliser on 48 minutes when De Bruyne picked out Raheem Sterling, who sent a low strike inches wide of the target from the edge of the box.

With City struggling to break the Arsenal defence down, Pep Guardiola introduced Phil Foden and Rodri for Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan just after the hour mark.

However, it was the Gunners who got the next goal on the counter as Kieran Tierney sent Aubameyang clear on goal before the striker slotted through Ederson's legs on 71 minutes.

City threw everything forward in search of a way back into the contest, but David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi did well to frustrate their opponents in the final third.

In the end, Arteta's men were able to hold out for the victory to advance to a record 21st final as they go in search for a 14th title.
