FA Cup Report: Norwich City v Manchester United 27 June 2020

Result: Norwich City 1-2 Manchester United

Date: 27 June 2020

Venue: Carrow Road

Manchester United sealed a spot in the FA Cup semi-finals after netting a late winner in extra-time to sink 10-man Norwich City on Saturday night.

United made wholesale changes, with only Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes retained in the line-up while the likes of Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard, Odion Ighalo were given a chance to stake their claim in the regular team.

The Canaries defended in numbers in the early exchanges, with United moving the ball around without much resistance but they could not penetrate in the last third.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's charges were not getting into another gear midway through the first stanza despite being in control of the game, making it easy for the deep lying Norwich to defend.

Daniel Farke's troops were growing in the game as a result and they came close to breaking the deadlock in the last two minutes of the first stanza after Lukas Rupp set himself up for a fierce strike just outside the box but Maguire was on hand to make the crucial block.

The visitors had a bright start in the second stanza as Ighalo finally got the breakthrough six minutes from the break with a volleyed flicked-shot inside the six-yard box away from shot-stopper Tim Krul after Juan Mata's deflected effort dropped on his path.

United were sitting deep, inviting the Canaries in the last quarter of an hour and they paid the price for it as Cantwell levelled matters for the hosts with a swerving low strike from well-outside the box that got away from goalkeeper Sergio Romero and found the bottom corner.

Norwich had the momentum in the closing stages but they almost took the game away from themselves as Timm Klose denied Ighalo a clear goal-scoring opportunity by pulling him from behind just outside the box and was red-carded as a result.

The Red Devils almost snatched the winner in the last action of the game deep in stoppage time as late substitute Paul Pogba broke clear on the left side of the box and let fly with a left-footed strike that was saved by Krul, sending the game to extra-time.

The visitors started to create more chances after that and Pogba almost gave them the lead two minutes before the half-time of extra-time with a stinging strike from range that made Krul uncomfortable, as he parried the shot away from goal.

Krul was the hero again for Norwich with nine minutes left of extra-time after diving at full stretch to keep out Maguire's goal-bound header off the line towards the bottom corner.

However, Maguire finally snatched the winner for United in the last two minutes with a sweeping strike from close range in a goal-mouth scramble and the Reds Devils held on to book a spot in the semi-finals with a 2-1 win.
