FA Cup Report: Newport County v Manchester City 16 February 2019

FA Cup

Result: Newport County 1-4 Manchester City

Date:16 February 2019

Venue: Rodney Parade

Manchester City overcame a disappointing first half to thrash Newport County 4-1 and secured a spot in the next round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening.

Riyad Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden were handed starts by Pep Guardiola, while Sergio Aguero was left out the City squad completely.

However, it was Newport who nearly took a surprisingly lead after 13 minutes when an un-marked Tyreeq Bakinson got on the end of a corner, but Ederson produced a stunning save to deny the midfielder.

The Citizens should have taken the lead on 33 minutes when Leroy Sane played a one-two with David Silva before smashing the crossbar from six-yards out.

City dominated for most of the first half, but they only had that one real chance from Sane as Newport defended quite well in the opening 45 minutes.

However, City took the lead six minutes into the second half as Sane collected through-ball from Jesus before firing home from a tight angle.

Despite going behind, Newport showed a bit of fight to get back into the encounter but they were unable to test Ederson between the sticks.

The visitors eventually doubled their lead with 20 minutes remaining as Phil Foden cut onto his left before drilling the ball home at the near post from 18-yards out.

Newport managed to pull a goal back in the 88th minute when Pádraig  Amond lobbed the on-rushing Ederson after some poor defending by City.

However, Foden killed off any hopes of a Newport comeback by rifling the ball home from close range just a minute later.

Mahrez netted City's fourth with the final kick of the game as the Citizens remain in contention to win four trophies this season.

Other results:

Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 Derby County

Wimbledon 0-1 Millwall

Queens Park Rangers 0-1 Watford (Friday night)
