FA Cup Report: Manchester United v West Ham United

Result: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham United

Date: 09 February 2021

Venue: Old Trafford

Manchester United advanced to the FA Cup quarter-finals for a seventh straight year with a 1-0 extra-time victory over West Ham United on Tuesday night.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made six changes to the side that drew with Everton at the weekend as he brought in Dean Henderson, Alex Telles, Nemanja Matic, Fred, Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial.

David Moyes made just three changes to his team after their draw with Fulham last time out, with Mark Noble, Pablo Fornals and Andriy Yarmolenko starting.

The Red Devils had the first opportunity of the match in the 11th minute. Telles played a one-two with Marcus Rashford to open up space before playing a through ball in behind the defence. Martial ran onto it and hit his shot on goal but Angelo Ogbonna got back to make an important block to deny him.

Victor Lindelof was very close to opening the scoring but his header was tipped onto the post by Lukasz Fabianski. Van de Beek then saw a shot turned over the top as the hosts wound up the pressure.

Van de Beek's evening came to an end on 75 minutes as he made way for Bruno Fernandes, while Scott McTominay replaced Nemanja Matic.

Eight minutes after the halftime break, a cross from the right bobbled through to Rashford at the far post, his chest control was great but his shot was a bit tame and Fabianski made himself big to make a fine save.

As full-time began winding down, Telles then whipped in a cracking ball and Martial headed it wide as the game went to extra-time.

United took the lead in the ninth minute of first-half extra-time. West Ham attacked and Declan Rice took a bad touch. United countered as Martial put in a cross from the left. Rashford retrieved it and teed up the fast-arriving Scott McTominay, who found the back of the net with a first-time strike.

A second always looked on the cards for United, who finished the stronger of the sides and held onto their slender advantage for the win.
