FA Cup Report: Manchester United v Liverpool

Result: Manchester United 3-2 Liverpool

Date: 24 January 2021

Venue: Old Trafford

Bruno Fernandes scored a late winner for Manchester United, who a booked their spot in the fifth round of the FA Cup after edging Liverpool in a five-goal thriller on Sunday evening.

Man United gave shot-stopper Dean Henderson and Donny van de Beek a run in the line-up while the Reds recalled Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and James Milner.

The Red Devils were forceful in the early exchanges but they went behind in the 18th minute after Salah went clear on goal inside the box from Firmino's through ball and chipped a right-footed strike over the onrushing Henderson.

United got the equaliser in the 26th minute after Mason Greenwood raced clear on goal from a long through ball over the defence by Rashford and fired a right-footed strike across goalkeeper Alisson and into the bottom corner.

Paul Pogba came close to giving them the lead just before the break with a free-kick from the edge of the box that missed the top corner by a whisker as the sides went to the break level with one goal apiece.

The hosts had a bright start in the second stanza as Rashford put his side ahead three minutes after Rhys Williams cleared Greenwood's through ball into his path before calmly slotting past the advancing Alisson.

Salah levelled matters for Liverpool just before the hour-mark with a low strike from close rnage after he was teed up by Firmino from a counter-attack to complete his brace.

The Egyptian had a great opportunity to give Jurgen Klopp's troops the lead and complete his hat-trick in the 66th minute after going through from Firmino's threaded pass but he fired his strike straight at Henderson.

After being substituted in last week's draw at Anfield after disappointing showing, Fernandes put United ahead in the last 12 minutes with a sublime free-kick from the edge of the box that beat Alisson.

Edinson Cavani came close to making adding a fourth goa for Solskjaer's men in the last minute with a free-header at the back post across goal that came off the post but the Red Devils held on to clinch a 3-2 win to secure a spot in the fifth round.
