The Gunners made only one change as Hector Bellerin returned at the expense of Joseph Willock while the Blues were unchanged as Willian did not make the matchday squad.

The game was open from the early stages, but it was Chelsea who drew first blood in the fifth minute after Olivier Giroud's back-heel sent Christian Pulisic clear on goal and the American kept his composure to chip shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez for the opener.

Arsenal thought they had netted the equaliser in the 26th minute after Nicolas Pepe curled a stunning first-time strike into the top corner but the goal was disallowed for offside.

However, a minute later the Gunners had a glorious chance to level matters after Cesar Azpilicueta brought down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang inside the box. The Gabonese striker stepped up to take the spot-kick and made no mistake to level matters.

Chelsea were dealt an injury blow ten minutes before the break, forcing Frank Lampard to reshuffle his defence as Azpilicueta went down with a hamstring injury and was replaced by Andreas Christensen.

The Blues did not have the best of starts in the second stanza, as Lampard had to make another forced substitution five minutes into the half, with the influential Pulisic replaced by Pedro, who was playing his last domestic game for the club.

After a slow start in the second stanza from both sides, Arsenal got their rhythm back the quickest after the hour-mark as Aubameyang got his second goal in the 67th minute, after turning Kurt Zouma inside-out on the left side of the box before dinking a left-footed strike over Caballero.

After going a goal down, Chelsea were also a man down six minutes later after Mateo Kovacic received a second yellow card for challenge on Granit Xhaka/.

Lampard reacted by making a triple substitution in the last ten minutes, with the intention of getting the equaliser, as Tammy Abraham , Callum Hudson Odoi and Ross Barkley replacing Giroud, Antonio Rudiger and Ross Barkley.

However, the Gunners were denied their London rivals any way back into the contest and went on to claim a 14th FA Cup trophy and booked a spot in the UEFA Europa League.
