Paul Pogba limped off injured, as Manchester United advanced to the Europa League quarterfinals, after claiming a 2-1 aggregate win over FC Rostov.
The sides came into the second leg at Old Trafford, after playing out a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Russia last week.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Juan Mata returned to the United line up, with Marcus Rashford and Ashley Young dropping to the bench.
Jose Mourinho's charges enjoyed an impressive start to the encounter and nearly went ahead after five minutes, but Marcos Rojo's header turned away by Medvedev.
The Red Devils should have opened the scoring after 28 minutes when Mata played in Henrikh Mkitaryan, whose lob sailed just wide of the upright.
Ibrahimovic went even closer after 35 minutes, as the Swede cut inside before rattling the upright with Medvedev well beaten.
The score remained goalless as the sides entered the halftime break.
The hosts were dealt a blow in the second half, as Paul Pogba was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Maroune Fellaini.
United were struggling to break down the Rostov defence as the half went on and they suffered another injury blow after 63 minutes as Daly Blind was substituted after taking a knock to the head.
The Red Devils eventualy broke the deadlock in the 70th minute as Ibrahimovic flicked Mkhitaryan's cross to Mata, who slotted home from six -yards out.
Sergio Romero came to United's rescue in the 78th minute, as the shot-stopper produced a stunning save to keep out Aleksandr Bukharov's glancing header.
Mourinho's men pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but could not carve out another opening as the score remained 1-0 at the full-time whistle.
