Europa League Report: Manchester United v Anderlecht 20 April 2017

Europa League Quarterfinal

Result: Manchester United 2-1 Anderlecht (3-2 on aggregate)

Date: 20 April 2017

Venue: Old Trafford

Marcus Rashford struck in second-half extra time to send Manchester United into the Europa League semi-finals, as they defeated Anderlecht 2-1 in the second leg.

The Red Devils broke the deadlock in the 10th minute as Rashford teed up Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who thumped the ball home from just inside the box.

Anderlecht should have been level in the 21st minute when Franck Acheampong broke through on goal, however the Ghanaian fired into the side-netting with only Sergio Romero to beat.

The hosts were dealt a blow a moment when later Marcos Rojo  was forced with an injury he sustained in an earlier challenge. He was replaced by Daley Blind.

The visitors leveled matters in the 31st minute as Sofiane Hanni rifled home from  close range after Youri Tielemans' deflected strike came off the crossbar.

United pushed for another goal as the first half went on, but the score remained 1-1 as the sides entered the break.

With the hosts struggling to break down Anderlecht in the second half, Jose Mourinho introduced Marouane Fellaini for Jesse Lingard in the 69th minute.

The Red Devils squandered another chance of 70 minutes when the ball fell to Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the box, but the swede failed to score from six-yards out.

The hosts squandered a number of chances in the closing stages, most notably Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba as the score remained 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, forcing the clash into extra time.

United suffered a blow on the stroke of full time as Ibrahimovic picked up a knock and was replaced by Martial at the start of first-half extra time.

Mourinho's charges eventually restored their lead in the 106th minute as Fellaini's knockdown found Rashford, who controlled well before firing into the bottom corner.

The Red Devils managed to see off a late surge from the Belgian outfit, as they progress to the final four of the tournament.
