Europa League Report: Anderlecht v Manchester United 13 April 2017

Europa League

Result: Anderlecht 1-1 Manchester United

Date: 13 April 2017

Venue: Constant Vanden Stockstadion

Henrikh Mkhitaryan clinched an away goal for Manchester United, as they recorded a 1-1 draw with Anderlecht in their Europa League quarterfinal first leg clash.

Sergio Romero kept his place in goal, while David De Gea returned to the bench for the Red Devils.

The visitors nearly broke the deadlock after 17 minutes, but Jesse Lingard struck the upright from close range after Zlatan Ibrahimovic's strike was saved.

Anderlecht were quite content to soak up the pressure and attack on the counter, although United were quite solid at the back.

Jose Mourinho's men eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute as Henrikh Mkhitaryan fired home from a tight angle, after Rashford's effort was saved.

The home side, meanwhile, struggled to carve out a clear-cut chance in the opening 45 minutes, as they went into the break trailing.

The Red Devils nearly added a second goal 10 minutes into the second half when Matteo Darmian picked out Mkhitaryan, who volleyed inches wide of the upright from 12-yards out.

With Anderlecht pushing for an equaliser, Mourinho opted for a change after 75 minutes as Rashford made way for Marouane Fellaini.

Paul Pogba should have doubled United's lead in the 82nd minute, but the Frenchman could only fire straight Ruben from close range.

United were made to rue that miss a few moments later, as Leander Dendoncker powered home a superb header into the far corner to level matters for the Belgian side.

Mourinho's men pushed for winning goal in the closing stages but were unable to carve out another chance, and were forced to settle for a draw.
