Man United handed Jonny Evans his first start since he was resigned while Hannibal Mejbri and Scott McTominay were recalled in the three changes from their defeat against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
The Clarets, on the other hand, were without Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster due to suspension and his place was taken by Aaron Ramsey.
The game got off to a lively start as within ten minutes Zeki Amdouni came close to giving Burnley the lead with a well powered header towards the bottom corner but goalkeeper Andre Onana made a good out-stretched save.
Vincent Kompany's charges were giving as much as they got as seven minutes later Amdouni beat Onana from a through ball in the box but his shot across goal came off the post.
Man United raised their game and Evans found the back of the net on 25 minutes with a towering header in the box after a cross by Sergio Reguilon but the goal was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for obstruction on goalkeeper James Trafford by Rasmus Hojlund.
As the game opened up, Bruno Fernandes eventually broke the deadlock for Erik ten Hag's charges on the stroke of half-time with a sublime first-time volley towards the bottom corner.
Burnley edged the possession stakes coming from the break but they could not test Onana, as Man United were happy to have them with the ball in areas they were not dangerous.
United knocked the ball around in the closing stages, running down the clock and Ten Hag gave Sofyan Amrabat his debut in place of Evans to crowd their midfield.
Amrabat nearly made a costly error in stoppages after he conceded a free-kick in a dangerous position but Onana earned United all the points with an assured save to smother a strike by Manuel Benson.
