Liverpool star Darwin Nunez has revealed that club legend Luis Suarez handed him a stern warning not to "screw up" again in the Premier League as he adapts to life in the English top flight.
Ten Hag Makes Bold Ronaldo Prophecy
The second-most expensive player in Liverpool's history has endured an erratic start to life at Anfield.
Arriving off the back of an impressive 2022/23 campaign with Benfica for €80 million (R1.4 billion), Nunez's Reds career took a turn almost immediately when he was sent off on his home league debut for headbutting Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen.
The red card prompted a message from compatriot and club great Suarez, which included an impromptu guide on how to not be provoked by defenders in the league.
"It was a good thing because not many would bother themselves to pick up the phone and send you a message. I think his gesture was really important for me," Nunez told ESPN.
"Luis is a reference point, an idol everywhere in the world. I'm getting started, I'm young, and he knows about all those things because he already played in the Premier League with Liverpool.
"Luis told me that these things will happen in every game in the Premier League, that they'll come and find me, that they're going to bump into me, and that I need to make myself strong and not repeat my screw-up.
"He said: 'Listen to an idiot like me.' I really appreciate that message and the fondness he has for me."
Report: Real Want Hazard Gone As Soon As Possible
Nunez will be hoping he can replicate the goalscoring feats Suarez was able to accomplish during his time on Merseyside.
In his three-and-a-half seasons playing under Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers, the Uruguayan was able to find the back of the net 82 times.
That said, Liverpool's latest big-money arrival has had a decent scoring rate thus far, with Nunez having scored six goals in 13 appearances.
