Result: Manchester City 3-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Date: 14 January 2019
Venue: Etihad
Manchester City kept their title charge alive with a comfortable 3-0 win over ten-man Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad on Monday night.
The Citizens were desperate for victory in their pursuit to keep up with Liverpool, who defeated Brighton and Hove Albion to move seven points clear.
City got off to the best possible start when Leroy Sane collected an impressive ball from Aymeric Laporte before teeing up Gabriel Jesus for the simple finish on 10 minutes.
Wolves were then dealt a blow ten minutes later when defender Willy Boly was given a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Bernardo Silva.
It got worse for the visitors in the 38th minute when City were awarded a penalty after Raheem Sterling was brought down in the box. Jesus stepped up and calmly slotted home for his second of the game.
The second half panned out in similar fashion the first, although Wolves did look a bit more livelier following the introduction of the pacey Adama Traore.
Pep Guardiola introduced Kevin de Bruyne after the hour mark as the Belgian continues his recovery to full fitness, and he nearly bagged a goal with a fierce volley after 66 minutes.
The third goal arrived with 13 minutes remaining when Wolves defender Conor Coady deflected De Bruyne's cross into his own net.
The home side saw out the remaining stages of the second half with relative ease as they ran out 3-0 victors to move within four points of leaders Liverpool.
