English Premier League Report: Leicester City v Chelsea 09 September 2017

English Premier League

Result: Leicester City 1-2 Chelsea

Date: 09 September 2017

Venue: King Power Stadium

Eden Hazard returned to the Blues squad, but only started on the bench alongside new signings Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater.

Chelsea enjoyed most of the possession in the opening stages with Cesc Fabregas conducting in the midfield. However chances were hard to come by.

After a quiet spell in the half, Leciester nearly broke the deadlock after 39 minutes when Riyad Mahrez played Islam Slimani, who was denied by a fine save from Thibaut Courtois.

However, Chelsea took the lead a minute later when Alvaro Morata peeled off his marker and headed home Cesar Azpilicueta's cross.

The Blues didn't have to wait too long in the second half to double their lead as N'Golo Kante was afforded time and space, and he fired home a low effort from 25-yards out in the 50th minute.

Leicester were then awarded a penalty in the 60th minute when Jamie Vardy was brought down by Thibaut Courtois. The English striker stepped up and converted the spot, 1-2.

Antonio Conte opted for a change after 73 minutes as Zappacosta replaced Victor Moses to make his Chelsea debut.

Zappacosta nearly marked his debut with a goal in the 80th minute the Italian's low strike sailed inches wide of the upright.

Chelsea went in search of more goals in the closing stages and also introduced Eden Hazard, but 2-1 was how the score remained.
