The 28-year-old netted his 54th national team goal in the Albiceleste's recent Copa America quarter-final win over Venezuela, drawing level with Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta at the top of his country's scoring charts.
Messi needed 111 games to reach the historic milestone, scoring at an average of 0.48 goals per game, while Batistuta needed just 77 appearances, averaging 0.70 goals a match.
"We took a very important step, playing well and we were always superior," Messi said, as quoted by Marca.
"In every match we always want to be the main protagonists, whoever our opponents are."
Argentina will now face USA in the Copa America Centenario semi-final on Wednesday morning, while Colombia and defending champions Chile will take each other on in the other semi.
Messi has already scored four goals and assisted a further two strikes in the tournament, despite starting two games from the bench.
