The Albiceleste began the match as the better of the two sides, using their speed to cause panic in Chile's defence, with Angel Di Maria a particular threat.
Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain was presented with a golden opportunity 23 minutes into the match when he pounced on a slip from Chile's Gary Medel. However, the striker chipped the ball agonisingly wide of Claudio Bravo's goal.
Five minutes later, Chile were reduced to 10 men. Marcelo Diaz picked up his second yellow of the match just before the half-hour mark after obstructing Messi – considered by many to be a harsh decision by the match official.
Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo was then sent off just before half-time for a tackle on Chile's Arturo Vidal. The Argentine received a straight red for his challenge, but Vidal seemed to have made the most of the situation.
The second half was a tight affair, with both sides having decent chances to put their teams ahead, but it was not to be. With the score 0-0 after 90 minutes, the game was forced into extra time.
Sergio Aguero popped up with arguably the best chance of extra time in the 101st minute, with Barca goalkeeper Bravo pulling out all the stops to get his fingers to a looping header from the Manchester City forward.
With the game was still scoreless after 120 minutes, penalties beckoned, just as they did in last year's Copa final between these two teams.
Bayern Munich midfielder Vidal stepped up to take the first spot-kick of the shootout and missed, with Sergio Romero making a smart save after correctly guessing which way to go.
Messi had the chance to give his country the advantage, but skied his effort from the spot.
