AC Milan forward Carlos Bacca put his country ahead in the 12th minute after Los Blancos' Rodriguez found his head from a corner to make the score 1-0 to Colombia.
Paraguay were largely outplayed by Colombia in the first half, and after 30 minutes the score was 2-0 to the Los Cafeteros – this time it was Rodriguez who was the scorer.
Bacca took on two players before playing the ball to Edwin Cardona, who slipped the Los Blancos playmaker through. Rodriguez did not need a second invitation to join the attack, and calmly found the back of the net with a sweet left-footed strike.
Paraguay headed into the second half with a vengeance, looking to mount a comeback, and Colombia found themselves under pressure as they sat back and attempted to defend their lead.
Victor Ayala pulled one back for the Paraguayans in the 71s minute, and it was an absolute screamer. The player's shot, from 25 yards, was too perfect for shot-stopper David Ospina to keep out.
Paraguay continued to pile pressure on Colombia, but some heroics from Ospina saw the score remain 2-1 to Los Cafeteros, with Rodriguez claiming the Man of the Match award.
