Copa America Report: Colombia 2-3 Costa Rica 12 June 2016

Colombia were surprised by Costa Rica on Saturday as they were beaten 3-2 in their Copa America, Group A clash. The scoring was opened only two minutes into the clash as Costa Rica took the lead. Johan Venegas received a long ball at the edge of the area and turned past Aguilar before hammering home a powerful shot. Colombia responded a mere four minutes later to level matters. Frank Fabra provided the moment of inspiration as he cut past three players before trying to set it up for Roger Martinez. A defender blocked the pass but the ball came back to Fabra who scored from 15 yards. However, Costa Rica were back in the lead in the 34th minute. Venegas showed great pace to get into a position to cross, and Fabra mistakenly directed the square ball into the back of his own net. The scoreline stayed at 2-1 until the 58th minute when Costa Rica surged two goals clear. Oviedo produced the cross and Venegas was in position to slam home a finish. Colombia were back in the game as they pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute thanks to Marlos Moreno who slotted a finish from Cuadrado's cross, but Costa Rica held on for the win. The result saw Colombia lose top spot in Group A but still qualify for the last eight, while hosts USA leapfrogged them after a 1-0 victory over Paraguay to clinch a quarter-final berth as well.
