Result: Leicester City 1 - 1 Manchester City (Man City won 3-1 on penalties)
Date: 18 December 2018
Venue: King Power Stadium
Manchester City are through to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup after beating Leicester City 3-1 on penalties at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Citizens, who made wholesale changes, had a stranglehold of the game in the early exchanges, limiting the hosts to a few chances on counter-attacks.
One of those changes, Kevin De Bruyne, eventually opened the scoring for Pep Guardiola's charges in the 14th minute with a fine individual effort from just outside the box. Demarai Gray almost equalised for Claude Puel's troops in the 22nd minute with a curling effort from just outside the box that was brilliantly parried away by shot-stopper Arijanet Muric. Guardiola's men were starved of possession towards the end of the half as the Foxes looked to restore parity before the break. Ward kept Leicester in the game two minutes into the second stanza after denying Sergio Aguero in a one-on-one situation after the Argentine beat the offside trap to slip through on goal. Riyad Mahrez nearly made it 2-0 for Guardiola's men 22 minutes before time, but his curling strike from just inside the box sailed slightly over the bar. Marc Albrighton eventually snatched the equaliser for the Foxes in the 73rd with a stunning half-volley into the top corner after he was picked out perfectly by Wilfred Ndidi. There were chances for both sides towards the end of the stanza, but they were unable to convert as the encounter went straight into penalties. After a series of disappointing spot-kicks, the Cititzens managed to triumph 3-1 in the shoot-out to progress to the last four.
