Carabao Cup Semi-Final Report Tottenham Hotspur v Brentford 05 January 2021

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Brentford

Date: 05 January 2021

Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the final of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Brentford at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday night.

Jose Mourinho made five changes to his starting line-up, with Serge Aurier, Davison Sanchez, Sergio Reguilon, Moussa Sissoko and Lucas Moura all coming into the side to replace Doherty, Alderweireld, Davies, Winks and Bergwijn.

Meanwhile Brentford boss Thomas Frank made just one change to his side, which saw Sorensen coming into the defence, as Pontus Jansson missed out.

Tottenham toook the lead in the 13th minute. The ball was switched out wide quickly and Sergio Reguilon had time and space to whip a superb cross into the penalty area, which was met by the head of Moussa Sissoko and he powered his header into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Brentford goalkeeper David Raya came up with a strong stop to deny Son, after Moura's little lay-off to him on the edge of the penalty area and Son tries to curl the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. However, it wasn't quite in the corner and the Raya made the save.

Tottenham were playing a high pressing game at the moment so it had been quite difficult for Brentford to get into the final third, with the likes of Ivan Toney and Sergi Canos unable to influence proceedings.

In the 35th minute, Toney just managed to get a head to the ball in front of Davison Sanchez after an excellent cross into the box from the right wing. However, he couldn't quite get enough pace on it and Hugo Lloris comfortably gathered.

Tottenham almost made it 2-0 five minutes out from half-time. A corner was whipped into the box from the left wing and Lucas Moura and Toney both went up for it and it seemed to strike the Brentford man on the back of the head and the ball flew towards the top right-hand corner. However, Raya made a terrific save, just getting a hand to it and pushing it away to safety.

It was a quick counter by Tottenham, with Kane feeding Ndombele and he then slid it in behind for Son to sprint onto the end of. Son only had Raya to beat and he fired the ball into the back of the net.

It was almost three in the 77th minute. Son laid the ball off to Tanguy Ndombele deep inside the box, who produced a superb piece of skill to beat his marker and he then only had Raya to beat from a very tight angle but couldn't quite get his foot around the strike and it cannoned against the post and went out of play.

All hopes of a Brentford comeback were dispelled when Josh Dasilva was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the closing stages as Spurs progressed comfortably in the end.
