Carabao Cup Semi-Final Report: Manchester United v Manchester City 06 January 2020

Report: Manchester United 0-2 Manchester City

Date: 06 January 2020

Venue: Old Trafford

Manchester City will meet Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup final after defeating city rivals Manchester United 2-0 in the semi-finals on Wednesday night.

Eric Bailly was surprisingly left out of the United line-up as Vitor Lindelof returned to the defence while Dean Henderson replaced David de Gea between the sticks.

After both sides had goals disallowed for offside, Kevin de Bruyne went close to giving City the lead on 12 minutes as he cracked the woodwork with a powerful strike.

City had the ball in the back of the net once again on 26 minutes when Phil Foden slipped the ball through Henderson's legs but once again, the offside flag went up.

Other than a late strike from Riyad Mahrez that sailed wide of Henderson's goal, City were unable to take advantage of their dominance in the opening 45 minutes.

However, City got the breakthrough five minutes after the break when De Bruyne's free-kick found John Stones, who bundled the ball home after Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire were caught napping.

Mahrez went close to putting City two goals ahead on 61 minutes after picking up a loose and driving to the box, but his powerful strike was tipped over the bar by Henderson.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally made his first change on 75 minutes, with Scott McTominay making way for young Mason Greenwood as they went in search of an equaliser.

However, City ended any hopes of a comeback were ended with seven minutes left on the clock courtesy of a fine first-time volley by Fernandinho to set up a final with Tottenham Hotspur.
