Chelsea were dumped out of the Carabao Cup after suffering defeat to Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur on penalties.
Frank Lampard handed full debuts to Ben Chilwell and Senegalese goalkeeper Eduardo Mendy while Sergio Reguilon made his first appearance for Spurs after signing from Real Madrid.
It was one of the Blues' other signings who got the opening goal on 18 minutes, as Timo Werner bagged his first goal for the club with a clinical finish from the edge of the box.
Spurs, who had Harry Kane on the bench, had to wait until after 20 minutes to enter Chelsea's box but Kurt Zouma did well to thwarted Gedson Fernandes.
Mendy was given his first piece of action 10 minutes before the break, with the Blues shot-stopper pulling off a good save to keep Erik Lamela's stinging effort.
Jose Mourinho's men came out firing in the second half, with Reguilon being denied by Mendy from close range just after 50 minutes while Serge Aurier fired wide from the edge of the box minutes later.
With the hosts pushing for an equaliser, Kane was eventually introduced with 20 minutes left in the contest before Lucas Moura also came on minutes later.
The equalising goal would come from a different source though as the influential Lamela popped up at the far post to turn home Reguilon's cross on 83 minutes, sending the game to penalties.
However, it was the North London outfit who held their nerve to convert all five of the penalties while Mason Mount missed the Blues' fifth spot-kick to send Mourinho's side into the next round.
