Carabao Cup
Result: Oxford United 0-3 Manchester City
Date: 25 September 2018
Venue: The Kassam Stadium
African star Riyad Mahrez was on target for the second successive game as Manchester City defeated Oxford United 3-0 to advance to the next round of the Carabao Cup.
The visitors were struggling to get into their usual rhythm after 20 minutes, as manager Pep Guardiola had made ten changes from the team that walloped Cardiff City in the Premier League over the weekend.
Soon after, Danilo fancied his chances from range for the Citizens, but his well-struck effort sailed over the crossbar.
However, Gabriel Jesus finally found the breakthrough for the visitors in the 36th minute, finding the back of the net with a close range header.
The Citizens were starting to get into their stride towards the end of the half, but they could not add to their tally, as they ended the first stanza leading 0-1.
City were looking to capitalise on set-pieces after the hour-mark but Oxford goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell commanded his position well.
With 12 minutes remaining, Mahrez punished the hosts with a clinical finish in a one-on-one situation following a swift counter-attack. His third goal in two games.
Philip Foden got the third goal for City in the last minute of stoppage time to round off a convincing victory with his first strike of the season.
