Carabao Cup
Result: Manchester United 2-2 Derby County (Derby won 8-7 on penalties)
Date: 25 September 2018
Venue: Old Trafford
Manchester United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a shock loss to Championship outfit Derby County on penalties.
Jose Mourinho made wholesale changes from the draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, as David de Gea, Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof dropped out. The Red Devils got off to the perfect start as the returning Juan Mata put the hosts ahead with a curling effort from close range after some good build-up play on three minutes. The hosts continued to carve out more chances as the half went on, as Anthony Martial picked out Romelu Lukaku in the box, but the Belgian somehow sent his header over the crossbar. The visitors did show a little more attacking intent in the final ten minutes of the half, but they were unable to trouble goalkeeper Sergio Romero. After a quiet start to the half, Derby restored parity in the 59th minute as Harry Wilson - on loan from Liverpool- smashed a free-kick into the top corner that left Romero with no chance. United were then reduced to ten men in the 67th minute when goalkeeper Romero was shown a straight red card for handling outside of the box. The Championship outfit took advantage of the numbers game and went ahead in the 87th minute through Jack Marriott's close range header after his initial effort was saved by Lee Grant. However, United levelled matters in the fifth minute of time added on with Marouane Fellaini heading past Scott Carson to send the game into a penalty shoot-out. The shoot-out went into sudden death, where Phil Jones' miss allowed Richard Keogh to slot home as Derby triumphed 8-7.
