Manchester United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup after losing 2-1 to Championship outfit Bristol City on Wednesday evening.
City nearly opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Josh Brownhill made good use of a free-kick to strike a stinging shot that was brilliantly saved by Sergio Romero.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic had a chance to get on the score-sheet in the 17th minute but his strike skimmed the top of the crossbar following a through ball from Paul Pogba.
United rattled the woodwork again in the 28th minute but this time it was Marcus Rashford who was unlucky to see his strike from the edge of the box be denied by the crossba.
Brownhill had another chance in the 37th minute with a thunderous strike from outside the box, but Romero was once again equal to it.
Ibrahimovic unleashed a half-volley two minutes before the break at the back post, but his effort sailed over the bar and the first half ended goalless.
Six minutes after the break, Joe Bryan grabbed the lead for City in a spectacular fashion with a thunderous strike that found the top corner from inside the box, 1-0.
The lead did not last long as Ibrahimovic put United level six minutes later with a fine free-kick from 25-yards out that sailed into the far corner, 1-1.
Romelu Lukaku had a chance to send United ahead in the 76th minute with a dipping strike from outside the box but his effort sailed over the bar, while the Belgian striker was denied by Luke Steel in the 86th as United upped the tempo.
However, Korey Smith sent the home crowd into raptures as scored deep in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 win for the home side to secure a spot in the last four at the expense of the tournament holders.
