Result: Arsenal 1-4 Manchester City
Date: 22 December 2020
Venue: Emirates Stadium
Manchester City advanced to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with a 4-1 victory over struggling Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Arsenal made eight changes to their side that was beaten by Everton last time out, while City made seven changes to their line-up that beat Southampton in their last outing.
It was a poor start for Arsenal as City took the lead in the third minute. It was all too easy for the visitors and Gabriel Jesus as the Brazilian headed home from close range after Oleksandr Zinchenko raided down the left flank and clipped a cross towards the near post. Runarsson committed and failed to get there ahead of Jesus, who nodded the ball into an empty net.
In the 13th minute, Alexandre Lacazette got ahead of his man to connect with Dani Ceballos' corner from the right flank, but he directed his effort wide of the right post.
Laczaette, however, made no mistake with a second bite at the cherry in the 31st minute. The Gunners had a rare foray forward down the left flank through Gabriel Martinelli. He did well to beat one challenge before lifting a dangerous cross into the middle. It sailed over the head of Joe Willock, but Lacazette was there to direct his effort into the top-left corner.
In the 41st minute, Riyad Mahrez and Ben Foden combined with Jesus to open up the Arsenal defence for the Brazilian. He only had Runarsson to beat, but the keeper spread himself to deny the City forward from close range.
City were gifted the lead by a shocking error from Gunners goalie Runarrson. Mahrez blasts his effort over the wall towards the net. Runarsson should have had the strike covered, but he succeeded in only punching the ball into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, it was 3-1 after Foden latched on to an offload from Fernandinho and clipped his effort over the onrushing Runarsson into the back of the net. Aymeric Laprote put the icing on the cake with the fourth and final City goal.
Foden played a one-two with Mahrez from a corner before bending a sublime cross into the box from the right flank. Laporte was unmarked from six yards and directed his effort past Runarsson with ease to wrap up a convincing win.
