Carabao Cup: Manchester United and Manchester City advance to Quarter-finals

Manchester United progressed to the last eight of the Carabao Cup after defeating Brighton and Hove Albion just a few days after their league encounter.

Scott McTominay gave the visitors the lead on the stroke of halftime with a close range off Juan Mata's cross.

Mata went on to double United's lead on 75 minutes with a composed finish into the bottom corner after a neat flick on from Donny van de Beek.

Second-half substitute Paul Pogba wrapped up the win with 10 minutes left in the contest as his free-kick deflected in off Joel Veltman.

Manchester City cruised into the quarter-finals with a 3-0 victory away to Burnley.

As expected, Pep Guardiola rang the changes after handing a first start to 18-year-old Cole Palmer in midfield while Zack Steffen started between the sticks.

It was Raheem Sterling who put the visitors 2-0 up with a brace before Ferran Torres bagged his first goal for the club on 65 minutes.

Newcastle United advanced to the quarter-finals after overcoming Newport County on penalties.

Tristan Abrahams put the hosts ahead after just five minutes before Jonjo Shelvey equalised in the 87th minute to send the game to penalties, where the Magpies triumphed 5-4.
