Bundesliga Report: Bayern Munich v Wolfsburg 16 December 2020

Result: Bayern Munich 2-1 Wolfsburg

Date: 16 December 2020

Venue: Allianz Stadium

Bayern Munich returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Wolfsburg on Wednesday evening.

Bayern manager Hans Flick made four changes from the side that was held to a 1-1 draw by Union Berlin, as Niklas Sule, Lucas Hernandez, Corentin Tolisso and Leroy Sane were all recalled.

Wolfsburg enjoyed a perfect start after Maximilian Philipp gave them a surprise lead in the fifth minute with a first-time volley into the bottom corner after a cross by Kevin Mbabu caught the hosts napping.

The Bavarians created a flurry of chances after that as Robert Lewandowski came close to getting the equaliser in the 17th minute with a powerful strike into the bottom corner that was saved by shot-stopper Koen Casteels.

Hansi-Dieter Flick's charges eventually found the equaliser on the stroke of half-time after Kingsley Coman skipped sent a cross towards the far post that was tapped home by the unmarked Lewandowski.

Lewandowski gave the hosts a 2-1 lead five minutes after the break after pouncing on a mistake by defender Maxence Lacroix before firing a strike past Casteels into the bottom corner.

After a quiet spell in the second half, Bartosz Bialek had a wonderful chance to snatch the equaliser for the visitors in the last five minutes after going through on goal inside the box but his looping strike was brilliantly parried away by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Bayern were threatening to kill off the game with their third goal in the dying minutes but they were denied clear chances and they settled for a 2-1 win. Despite ending up on the winning side, Bayern still sit a point behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen who romped to a 4-0 victory away to Koln on Wednesday night.

Koln 0-4 Bayer Leverkusen
Hoffenheim 0-1 RB Leipzig
Arminia Bielefeld 0-1 Augsburg
Schalke 0-2 Freiburg
